Reconnecting With Your Inner Child

Many of us move through adulthood carrying experiences from earlier in life that were never fully understood or comforted. These younger parts of us—sometimes called the inner child—hold our early joys, fears, and unmet needs.

When those needs went unseen, we often learned to cope in ways that helped us survive: becoming the responsible one, the peacekeeper, the achiever, or the person who never asks for too much. These strategies made sense then. As adults, though, they can leave us feeling disconnected from our own emotions.

Inner child work invites you to slow down and listen to those younger parts with compassion rather than judgment. It is not about blaming the past or staying stuck in it. It is about offering yourself, now, the understanding and care you may not have received then.

In session, this might look like noticing when a present-day reaction feels much bigger than the situation calls for—and gently exploring what younger memory or need it might be connected to. Over time, you become someone your inner child can trust.

Reconnecting with these parts can soften long-standing patterns and open up a more compassionate relationship with yourself. You are allowed to grow up and still tend to the child within.
